Job Summary
The Casework Officer supports the delivery of disclosure and casework activity across the J9 Disclosures function, contributing to the preparation, management and integrity of material relating to litigation, inquiries, Subject Access Requests (SARs) and civil claims involving Specialist Military Units (SMU). The role ensures that casework outputs are underpinned by accurate, complete and auditable records, enabling Defence to meet its statutory, legal and information governance requirements.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job Description
Working as part of the casework team, the post holder supports the collection, organisation and preparation of material for disclosure and external release. This includes maintaining structured case files, ensuring documentation is correctly indexed, labelled and recorded, and enabling the timely retrieval of information in response to legal, Parliamentary and inquiry-driven tasking. The role contributes directly to the production of disclosure bundles and evidential material under the direction of Casework Officers and LEGADs.
The role maintains robust document control and information management processes across J9 casework, ensuring that records are held within secure, structured and auditable systems. This includes the governance of SharePoint libraries, application of metadata and naming conventions, management of permissions and version control, and oversight of document storage and retrieval. Through this, the role supports the traceability, defensibility and integrity of SMU case handling.
In addition, the Casework Officer 2 provides casework coordination and secretariat support, including managing correspondence, maintaining case trackers and ensuring that information flows are controlled and up to date across multiple workstreams. The post holder supports knowledge continuity by maintaining authoritative templates, records and document sets, ensuring consistency and reducing duplication or loss of information within high-volume casework.
Under direction, the post holder supports the preparation of material for disclosure, including document collation, formatting, indexing and basic redactions, ensuring outputs meet required standards and are handled in accordance with security classifications and legal guidance.
Operating within a high-tempo, scrutiny-driven environment, the role requires strong attention to detail, organisational discipline and the ability to manage competing priorities. The Casework Officer contributes directly to the efficient delivery of casework, the production of defensible disclosure outputs, and the maintenance of a secure and compliant information environment, supporting Defence’s ability to meet its legal and statutory obligations.

Person specification
The successful candidate will be a reliable and detail‑oriented professional with strong organisational skills and the ability to manage sensitive information accurately and securely. While prior experience in casework, disclosure, redaction or information governance is advantageous, it is not essential. More important is the ability to learn quickly, apply structured judgement and work confidently with evidential material in a secure, disciplined environment. You will demonstrate excellent written communication skills, producing clear, accurate and well‑structured casework outputs, including evidential bundles, correspondence and record updates. You must be able to follow policy, legal and security guidance precisely, ensuring records, case files, redactions and disclosures meet MOD standards. Strong analytical skills are essential for reviewing material, identifying relevant information and supporting litigation, inquiries, SARs and routine civil claims.
You will work collaboratively with colleagues across the J9 team, including policy advisers, lawyers, and the redactions function, contributing to a high‑integrity, audit‑ready evidence base for SMU. You will be comfortable operating at pace, managing multiple tasks with competing deadlines, and maintaining accuracy, discretion and professional standards throughout. You must be able to handle sensitive material, applying sound judgement and situational awareness when working with operational and legal content, consistent with security rules.

Candidates that reach the minimum required pass mark will have their results saved as a banked score against the following tests:

When a candidate has a banked score they’re not asked to re-take the same test providing it is set at the same level. Scores will be banked for a 6 month period from the date of test completion.
