The Role
To provide community-based tier 3 NHS specialist neurodevelopmental assessment and intervention based on the principles of equality, dignity and respect and which takes into account spiritual and cultural diversity.
Referrals are received from Community Medical staff, General Practitioners and other healthcare professionals, as well as Educational Professionals and self-referrals. The caseloads are constantly changing with a high demand for services.
Responsibilities
The Neurodevelopmental Service (ND Service) sits within Specialist Children’s Services of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. The responsibilities of the ND Service are to:
Provide a high quality and equitable ND service to the local population across a community setting.
Work together with other clinical specialities to provide the most effective care to children with a diverse range of neurodivergent conditions and to their families and carers.
Support the development and implementation of the key service specifications of the National Neurodevelopmental Strategy.
All children/young people being assessed will have a Case Coordinator who is tasked with working closely with their identified patients/carers to develop a participative, therapeutic relationship and deliver high quality specialist assessment and care in an environment where patients feel valued and where confidentiality is respected.

Base location - Woodside Health and Care Centre
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Accountable for all professional clinical activities.
- Assess neurodivergent profiles and contribute to developing and delivering specialist care programmes.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary interventions and provide education to patients, carers, and professionals.
- Work jointly with Education staff to align therapeutic and educational goals.
- Provide lonepractitioner ND input across clinics, homes, nurseries, and schools.
- Manage clinical risk within own caseload and delegated team caseload.
- Use specialist knowledge to refer to other disciplines appropriately.
- Support the patient care pathway under direction of the ND Clinical Coordinator.
- Apply national guidelines, legislation, and child protection standards.
- Maintain professional standards set by HCPC, NMC, or relevant bodies.
Planning and Organisation
- Manage and prioritise a daily caseload, balancing clinical and professional duties.
- Oversee ongoing management of complex care plans, adjusting interventions as needed.
- Ensure service quality standards and national guidelines are met.
- Plan and organise time flexibly to include patient care, training, supervision, and meetings.
- Attend mandatory training and follow local procedures.
Service Development
- Contribute to continuous improvement of patient care quality and service effectiveness.
- Propose and implement changes to ND service practice and procedures.
- Support strategic and operational development of the ND Service with the Clinical Coordinator.
- Participate in and lead elements of departmental and multiagency training programmes.
Information Resources
- Maintain accurate written and electronic patient records.
- Produce statistical reports and service analyses using databases.
- Ensure ND service documentation meets departmental standards.
Physical Resources
- Comply with NHSGGC policies, Health & Safety legislation, infection control, and universal precautions.
- Report complaints, incidents, and accidents promptly and document appropriately.
Governance
- Maintain personal professional development and stay updated on neurodivergence practice.
- Keep a CPD portfolio and participate in KSF/PDP processes.
- Supervise and support the development of staff and students.
- Participate actively in staff meetings and peer groups.
- Advise the ND Clinical Coordinator on service changes affecting care quality.
Research and Audit
- Participate in departmental audits and relevant research or evaluation projects.
- Supervise evidencebased projects and support professional presentation of findings.
- Stay informed on evidencebased paediatric practice through training, reading, and research.
- Maintain knowledge of national and local standards.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
Essential
- Registered nurse, Allied Health Professional, or equivalent profession.
- Educated to minimum degree level or equivalent.
- Registered with relevant professional body.
- Advanced knowledge of neurodiversity and a range of neurodevelopmental profiles.
- Advanced knowledge of normal child development.
- Evidence of active and ongoing CPD.
- Evidence of providing Clinical Supervision or reflective practice as a supervisor.
- Specialist knowledge of rights, valuesbased practice, and legislative frameworks.
- Confident use of digital technology, information systems, email, and basic applications.
- Experience working in community settings.
- Ability to work flexibly, prioritise workload, delegate appropriately, and deliver personcentred care without direct supervision.
- Ability to form therapeutic professional relationships and work effectively within a wider team.
- Ability to undertake multiple clinical contacts in home or nearhome environments, including driving when required.
Desirable
- Experience in service development, including design and implementation.
- Strong working knowledge of clinical governance, including quality, audit, and risk management.
- Experience of care coordination.
