Job Overview
The Patient Support Assistant is a member of the ward / unit care team appointed to
support the Nursing and clerical staff.
To work as a valued member of the ward team in providing a patient focused and friendly
environment. To give practical support to the nursing staff, liaising with a variety of
departments within the hospital, and being flexible in developing the role so that the
individual needs of the ward can be catered for.
Main duties of the job
To support the provision of a food service. This includes assisting the patients with food
selection; distributing and collecting ward menus; the provision of hot/cold drinks on
request, preparing both the environment and the patient for meals and assisting where
necessary, whilst ensuring food hygiene standards are met.
To work as part of a team in maintaining a clean and de-cluttered environment. Having
particular responsibility to clean medical equipment that is not routinely cleaned by the
cleaning dept – list to be agreed.
Help to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff, reporting any hazards, which
might endanger others to the Nurse in charge and/or where applicable take appropriate
action to remove these.
To report faulty equipment to the relevant department within the hospital and monitor
repair timescale.
To assist in the organisation of the ward on a day to day basis by maintaining adequate
supplies of equipment, linen and other stock as required, including ordering non-stock
items via IT system as required.
To assist the nursing staff by carrying out minor errands such as delivering and
collecting items to and from the pharmacy department.
