Main duties of the job
As our Chief Strategy Officer you will be accountable for:
- Shared Executive accountability, shaping the strategic direction of the organisation in order to achieve its vision and contribute to the development of the organisations strategic and annual business plans.
- Developing and implementing appropriate strategies to actively manage our reputation with all stakeholders.
- Lead a diverse directorate to actively drive and lead the strategic priorities of both the organisation and wider healthcare landscape, to meet the everchanging needs of the NHS.
- Lead the transformation agenda to identify, evaluate and prioritise opportunities for cultivating innovative and transformational solutions.
- Deliver an appropriate customer strategy which takes into account the customer needs in relation to all aspects of NHSBSA services and ensure that the customer proposition is communicated.
- Collaborate with the Executive and Non-Executive Board in order to develop, finalise and produce the NHSBSA strategy, business plan and annual report, including developing a long term business plan.
- Work collaboratively with business leaders and their teams to identify and analyse strategic initiatives, develop actionable strategic plans, and drive execution against plans.

Job Description
In this role, you are accountable for:
- Shared Executive accountability, shaping the strategic direction of the organisation in order to achieve its vision and contribute to the development of the organisations strategic and annual business plans.
- As an Executive Member of the Board, playing an active and collaborative role in the effective management and achievement of the goals of the NHS Business Services Authority, recognising the significant impact our activities has on the national population and wider healthcare landscape, and enabling those to grow and be delivered.
- Developing and implementing appropriate strategies to actively manage the reputation of NHSBSA with all key stakeholders.
- Lead a diverse directorate team, to actively drive and lead the strategic priorities of both the organisation and wider healthcare landscape, to meet the everchanging needs of the NHS, aligned to the NHS national plans and Secretary of State priorities.
- Lead organisational and system wide innovation and drive the necessary system, people and culture changes to serve NHSBSA customers and stakeholders in a more consistent, customer driven, and efficient manner.
- Lead organisational wide activity in response to cabinet office led initiatives, including ALB reviews and taxpayer value programme, supporting the organisation to deliver great taxpayer value through the identification of business improvements and validation of efficiencies.
- Provide assurance to the Leadership Team, Board and our Sponsor that we are delivering against what we set out to through performance and benefits reporting delivered via monthly reporting and End of Year reports and balanced scorecards.
- Provide executive leadership for the organisations risk management framework, ensuring risks are effectively identified, assessed, managed and reported.
- Oversee and strengthen first and second line assurance processes across the organisation, ensuring clarity of roles, responsibilities and effective challenge.
- Lead the relationship with Internal Audit, ensuring delivery of a robust, risk-based annual audit programme that supports the Head of Internal Audit Opinion.
- Ensure audit recommendations and assurance findings are tracked, implemented and embedded to improve organisational effectiveness
People relationships
- Collective Executive accountability for delivery of our Strategy.
- Work collaboratively with business leaders and their teams to identify and analyse strategic initiatives, develop actionable strategic plans, and drive execution against plans.
- Proactively build effective working relationships with Ministers, Senior DH officials, other ALBs, suppliers, key external partners and other key players in the Health Economy in order to promote best practice, develop business relationships and input into strategic initiatives.
- Ensure there is appropriate medical and clinical expertise and support for the Leadership Team, wider organisation and external programmes of work that require a medical/clinical or professional focus.
- Ensure we comply with our duties under Caldicott principles including the provision of a suitably qualified Caldicott Guardian.
- Collaborate with the Executive and Non-Executive Board in order to develop, finalise and produce the NHSBSA strategy, business plan and annual report, including developing a long term business plan.
Transformation strategy
- Act as a driving force behind critical strategic, organisational and operational initiative, that impact both internally and wider into the health system.
- Lead the transformation agenda to identify, evaluate and prioritise opportunities for cultivating innovative and transformational solutions. Undertaking strategic reviews of all new opportunities, services and major change proposals to identify risks and mitigations across the business, supporting senior management to decide if the NHSBSA should go ahead with an opportunity.
- Direct multiple business strategy programmes that produce recommendations for addressing major internal and external strategic issues, identify major growth opportunities and develop business plans for realising these opportunities; programmes may be within a business unit, across multiple business units, or involve the creation of a new business venture, such as a joint venture, equity alliance, acquisition, etc.
- Bring a strong customer-focused, evidence based approach to unlock new insights, drive innovation and create value. Provision of tailored offerings to the wider system, including ICSs and PCNs.
- Develop, with the input of senior colleagues, appropriate metrics for contract performance, ensuring that these are integral to contracts and allow for effective analysis, monitoring and reporting internally and externally.
- Deliver an appropriate customer strategy which takes into account the customer needs in relation to all aspects of NHSBSA services and ensure that the customer proposition is communicated to customers. Carrying out end-to-end reviews of NHSBSA services from a customers perspective, identifying opportunities to improve and sharing best practice. Considering customer feedback from across the national population, KPIs and metrics, and working collaboratively with services and projects to ensure the best possible journey for customers across the whole system.
- Provide expert leadership to develop and manage allocated business transformation programmes and activities, ensuring transformation is aligned to strategic priorities, delivers measurable benefits and supports long-term organisational objectives.
